Steve, The way I have done it is messy but works.
I have a number of hyertexts, one for each sub-directory. I created the Dir structure using an FTP program. I set up the password system also using the FTP program, then I "Publish" the hypertext into the appropriate Dir.
If you want further more detailed info let me know.

Hi!
Additionally, You can create sub-directories also with the internal FTP (there's a create new folder button, identical to the mswindows explorer create new folder button).
Then usually the Control Panel of your Web server permits you to password protect a folder / directory (ask your host if you don't find this feature)
